Understanding your speed test results
SpeedStar runs in your browser and measures the connection between your device and a Cloudflare test server. These are the numbers it reports and what they mean.
- Download speed
- How quickly data reaches your device from the internet, shown in megabits per second (Mbps). It affects streaming, browsing and downloading files.
- Upload speed
- How quickly data leaves your device, also shown in Mbps. It matters for video calls, sending large files and cloud backups.
- Latency (ping)
- The time in milliseconds for a small request to reach the test server and get a reply. SpeedStar measures it with HTTP requests from your browser, so it can differ from the ping command on your computer. Lower is better.
- Jitter
- How much latency varies from one request to the next, in milliseconds. A steady connection with low jitter suits voice and video calls and online games.
From these numbers SpeedStar also gives a Good, Medium or Bad rating for video streaming, online gaming and video chatting.
Getting a more reliable result
Close apps and pause streams or downloads that use your network, and test over Ethernet or near your router when you can. Results can change from run to run and by time of day, so compare a few tests. Each result reflects the path between your browser and the Cloudflare location that served it. It is not a guarantee of the speed you pay for.
